Campaigning in Hamburg in front of the townhall

In our campaign the European Green Seniors want to invite older adults to sit on a bench and talk to us. Here are some of the questions we could ask.

a) What do you think of the idea of ‘friendship benches’? Are there enough meeting places here in the neighbourhood?

b) What is life like here for older people? What’s good, and what needs to change?

c) What annoys you? (Key points: access to healthcare, accessibility of public transport and green spaces/parks, accessible housing, accessibility in public spaces, trip hazards on footpaths, lighting on footpaths, icy footpaths in winter, public toilets, enough water dispensers and shady places in public)

d) Do you feel left behind digitally?

e) Do you feel, you are living in a caring community?

We want to publish a video with all the people of different countries on the 1st of October, the international day of older adults. It was launched by the United Nations in 1990 to draw attention to the living conditions, needs and contributions to society of older people, and to strengthen solidarity between the generations.

It would be wonderful if lots of countries took part in the campaign. The questions are just a guide; we can also simply listen to what people want to tell us.

We could have the benches designed by artists and/or by our over-60s groups. We can make use of existing benches in the city or in the countryside, or get hold of a portable bench that can be set up in various locations. We can discuss about the situation of older people or we discuss our crisises, the climat, wars, the party.

There are so many ways to strike up a conversation. And that’s the most important thing!

And on top we decided, we will held a webinar about Ai and Ageism!
