Germany: Out of shame many pensioners do not apply for basic social care

In Germany, pensioners above 65 years who receive too little pension, can apply for basic social care of a maximum of Є 374, – plus the costs for adequate housing. They have to apply therefor, but many are ashamed or unaware. More than half of the older seniors are affected, women disproportionately so.

Many seniors rather save money rigorously and thus live in hidden poverty because they do not want to apply for additional benefits from the social security office.

The amount of additional benefits per person averaged Є 447.
